There are two types of people in this world - both of whom scream when they hear the name Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana. The first group of people let out a high-pitch squeal that preludes all of their debates on how pretty or talented or cool she is; the second group of people scream, then wish they hadn’t heard the name, because they are so beside themselves in believing that she is a “lame excuse for a singer”, a stupid Disney Channel star, or simply a bad role model after sliding down a pole at the Teen Choice Awards.

First we need to break it down as my musically inclined little sister pointed out: Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus are “two different people” thus two styles of music. To sum up Miley’s album, “Both Worlds”, two songs will be chosen from each Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana.

Miley Cyrus, as an artist, makes me frightened not only because of the general effect her music has on the ear drum, but for the sheer lack of depth which plagued Brittney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and at times Christina Aguilera (all of whom are now remembered for their skimpy attire and dirty dancing). “Oh my gosh! . . . Her voice is so aggravating!!” screams Mrs. Barron when I play her songs while researching Miley and thus exemplifying a “type two” person.

“Seven Things” and “Party in the U.S.A.” are a couple of her popular hits (purchased by “type one” teenage girls or their reluctant mothers). Both are upbeat and, for lack of a better word, sugary. I say sugary because first, everyone involved with the production of this song must have been strung out on either Lucky Charms or cotton candy to have created the songs. Secondly, special effects are used to coat her voice in sweet syrup that hides the vocal imperfections. Lastly, sugar is probably a leading component in the diets of the “type one” people who usually listen to Miley.

Hannah Montana differs from Miley Cyrus in three main ways (four if you include my assumptions of the target audience) which are innocence, added effects, and bubbly-ness.  Hannah Montana keeps her music happy, perky, and innocent. She also uses fewer effects than Miley Cyrus. After all, Disney does have “standards” which help rake in as much money as possible.

Bubbly-ness is also a crucial element in both Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus’s work. Miley’s sassy “I’m more than just a Disney Channel star. . . ” attitude didn’t carry over to her work with Disney. When recording for Hannah Montana she is as bubbly as the stereotypical blond that she plays.

Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana, that one Disney Channel girl - whatever you call her, people will still scream at the sound of her. And her music will always be associated with the younglings fresh from middle school. If you haven’t already taken the hint, I’m the “second type” of person.

When it comes to Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus, which type are you?
