The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, first began on May 16, 1929.  The awards were held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  The movie Wings won the award for Best picture and Emil Jannings won Best Actor for Last Command.  Over the years, the Oscars have been held at a variety of different places such as the Ambassador Hotel in Hollywood, the Biltimore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, and the Pantages Theater.  This year they are being held at the Kodak theater in Hollywood, Ca and have been held their since 2002.

This year there are some big movies nominated for the awards.  The top movies that are nominated for the Best Picture are Avatar, The Blind Side, and District 9.  Avatar is the movie favored to win.  For the category of Best Actor the nominees are Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman, and Jeremy Renner.  The actor that is favored to win by abc news is George Clooney in Up in the Air.  The other main category is Best actress.  There are five women nominated in this category.  They are Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe, and Meryl Streep.  The two women favored to win by the Huntington Post are Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia and Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side.

The Oscars are this Sunday March 7 at 8:00pm eastern time and 5:00 west coast time and will be televised on ABC. Make sure you watch to see the wonderful show and all the winners!
