Senior Trip News

As April looms closer, two of the biggest events of the year are just around the corner: Prom and the Senior Trip. While students are dreaming about all the exciting prom details for the April 17th event (like which dress or tuxedo to wear, who the lucky date is, or if a limo is out of the question), the senior trip on April 7th has been a hotly debated topic by teachers and administration. There were several question about funding, practicality and participation. After much discussion, there is some bad news concerning the seniors and their beloved end-of-the-year outer-island trip. It is with deepest regrets that I must inform the senior class of 2010 that their trip to Kauai has been cancelled.

Terrible right!? Now just hold on, though. I know you guys were hoping to go on a wonderful hike where you would be able to take in some breathtaking views, do some fun shopping, and be able to spend some wonderful time away from the school that you love to pieces, but never fear! A new itinerary is being pulled together so that a fun time will be still be had by all.

Although you will not be travelling off-island, much effort has been put into compiling some wonderful local adventures for the Seniors, including:

• Wednesday April 7th: Seniors will be joining a leadership program for the day that will involve reading aloud to young children in downtown Honolulu. This will help to instill the core values that everyone is currently learning in advisory through this fun experience.

 • Thursday April 8th: Through a recent partnership with the Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) the students will  get involved in some of the educational and self-improvement programs that inmates go through during their stay in the facility. This eye-opening experience will be all day and will continue into a sleep-over in the actual cells!

• Friday April 9th: Students will be bused directly from the OCCC to the Lyon Arboretum. There, students will gain knowledge about native Hawaiian plants will be while working with the grounds crew in a morning of weeding and helping to remove invasive plants from the Arboretum.

Again, it really is sad to hear that this big trip will be cancelled, but you guys will still have fun here on Oahu with the great new itinerary…so stay positive. Just don’t shoot the messenger.
