During this time of year there are many scary movies on television and in the theaters ready to scare your pants off! With high schoolers being so busy with school, home work, sports, jobs, and other extracurricular activies there are some particular questions that come to mind when it comes to watching scary movies. How will I find the time to watch them and what are the best scary movies that will get me in the mood for Halloween?
There are hundreds of scary movies that have been produced in the last 60 years; some better than others. Some make you so scared you have to lock your doors and windows and sleep with the light on. These ten classic horror movies are some of the scariest out there…perfect to watch for Halloween.
Amityville Horror (1978)
A family moves into a perfectly nice house in Amityville, NY. Everything is going well until mysterious things keep happening to the father. He starts going crazy, kills his dog and plans to kill his family. Based on a true story!
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Nightmare on Elm Street is directed by Wes Craven and it is about a man named Freddy Kruger who is able to come into teens dreams, which is not a good thing. If they don’t wake up in time then he kills them. A new chapter of this film series comes out in 2010!!
The Shining (1980)
A man in a secluded hotel goes crazy. He starts trying to kill his family while little girls (who are ghosts) wander around the hotel chanting “red rum, red rum” – read that backwards and you’ll understand why this film is super creepy.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Silence of the Lambs stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. Anthony Hopkins plays a man named Dr. Hannibal Lecter who is an imprisoned cannibalistic serial killer. Jodie Foster plays a young FBI agent who interviews Lecter on another serial killer who goes by the name Buffalo Bill (he likes to wear the skins of his victims -ewww).
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Five college students are driving through the middle of no-where, Texas. While they are driving they come along a hitchhiker and let her come into their van. The hitchhiker speaks of a mad-man but before she says anything else she kills herself. The five friends take her to the closest town where they try to call the police. Two of them go to look for the sheriff and they come along a mysterious and creepy house full of crazed murderers.
The Exorcist (1973)
The exorcist is about a girl who supposidly has a demon inside of her. Her mother is very concerned and seeks two priests to come and try to save her daughter. Spinning heads, demonic chanting and gallons of vomit make this a can’t miss film!
Halloween (1978)
The setting for Halloween is in Haddonfield, Illinois. It is about a man named Michael Myers who escapes from a psychiatric hospital and begins murdering teenagers and his doctor who tries to stop him. This film stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence.
Psycho (1960)
Psycho takes place at the Bates Motel where the son of the owner of the motel, Norman Bates, goes crazy and starts killing the motel’s guests. Norman Bates is obsessed with his mother and a girl stops by his motel. After seeing the shower seen you will think twice about taking one again. One of Alfred Hitchcock’s finest works.
Jaws (1975)
A police chief in Amity Island tries to warn beach-goers about a shark that is terrorizing the community. This isn’t just any old shark, though, it is a massive 200 pound one that eats people and even boats!
Carrie (1976)
A girl named Carrie who is picked on all throughout school gets asked to the prom by the most popular boy in school. She is even voted Prom Queen. Sadly this a cruel joke and then everything goes wrong at Prom from then on. When you watch this movie you will be happy that Carrie doesn’t go to LJA. Based on the Stephen King Novel Carrie.
“Paranormal Activity” is another scary movie that has just recently come out in theaters. It is about mysterious spirits that goes on in peoples houses at night. If you are able to watch this movie without jumping out of your seat or screaming like a little girl then go see “The Fourth Kind” that comes out in theaters on November 6. “The Fourth Kind” is based on alien abduction that goes on in Alaska. Watch this movie to find out what the fourth kind of alien activity is.
So if you have nothing to do this Saturday night, grab some popcorn, candy and some of these movies from Blockbuster or head to the theatre and invite your friends over for a scary night that they will never forget. Just don’t forget to leave the lights on and the doors locked!
