Guy Ritchie takes the main idea of the old Sherlock Holmes and turns it into an action packed, but predictable flick.  Ritchie sets up the plot for the viewers to solve a mystery and, ultimately, the moviegoers are the detectives.

Holmes (Robert Downy Jr.) and Watson (Jude Law) feed off each other.  Their chemistry allows the viewers to really get into the movie.  Usually, observing bickering gets old and annoying, but in this case, it’s intriguing and funny. Their relationship is like one of a married couple.  When Watson decides to move out to live with his fiancé, a hint of jealousy is exerted from Holmes.  Holmes, although adventurous and daring, needs Watson, who helps balance Holmes’ life.

The movie begins with Lord Blackwood’s arrest and hanging, but he uses his dark powers to resurrect him.  When word gets out about this unexplainable occurrence, Holmes Watson continues their quest for solving an unexplainable supernatural puzzle.  But to add to the confusion, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), Holmes’ ex-wife, returns to London with a hidden agenda.

Ritchie depicts Holmes as more of a street fighter than a detective.  This could be either a downfall or an intrigue – depending on who watches the movie.  The stunts Holmes does are cleverly plotted out.  Ritchie introduces a fight/action scene with Holmes mapping out how to take down his opponent- in slow motion.  This is an interesting style because the audience gets a sense of how Holmes’ thinks and acts.

Although this movie is centered on the “mystery” book, it is filled with action.  The director mixes in action to keep the story jumping at every turn.

Robert Downey Jr. portrays Sherlock Holmes well, especially with his British accent (although he’s an American). Jude Law and Robert Downy Jr. compliment each other well.  Together, Robert and Jude make a great acting team; hopefully this will carry over to future sequels.
